THE ATLAS OF THE MIND FIELD - PERSONAL MAPS for easy travel
THE MIND FIELD OF VIBRATIONS, WHIRLPOOLS,
ELECTRO MAGNETIC WAVES.
External stimuli from the world captured
by the five senses / Indriyas causes numerous Internal whirlpools of pleasure
& pain in the crucible of Chitta which is the store house all lovable &
hateful impressions / samskaras. Manas &
Ahankara take over from this point without involving Buddhi to act out the
Karmas good & bad regardless of the consequences.
CHITTA
Chitta
the Cauldron of impressions & thinking substance has five stages. The
restless ksipta, the torpid mudha, the distracted viksipta, the focused ekagra &
the restricted niruddha.
If CHITTA
is not coordinated with the other functions of mind field, then countless
impressions in this lakebed of Chitta start to stir & arise as VRITTIS. It
is as if these many latent impressions, coming to life are all competing for
the attention of MANAS to carry out their wants in the external world. In the
absence of a clear BUDDHI, the competing Vrittis often drive Manas to take
actions in the world that are futile & harmful.
MANAS – AN EXPORTER & IMPORTER OF
THOUGHT TRAINS
There
is a difference between Manas & the mind. The mind is a generic term used
to denote the entire human psychology involving feelings, emotions, volition,
thoughts & more. Manas uses this aspect of Import & export to fabricate
& weave air castles using full spectrum of likes & dislikes, induced
from the crucible of Chitta. Manas has huge imaginative power & so is
emotionally dominant, constantly ruled by compulsions. A Jiva forgets its true
self & keeps becoming a victim to its inherent Vasana & constantly
struggles in decision-making. Manas has
many layers to it. It is right across the body. Every cell in the body has a
phenomenal memory – not just of this life but of millions of years. Top to bottom,
there is manas, this is called Mano Maya Kosha In every cell in the
body, there is memory & Innate intelligence.
Both
Tamas and Rajas of Prakriti manifest in our Manas & Ahamkara. When both
Tamas and Rajas are in balance, the manas reaches desired Sattvic state. The Manas
can either be clouded by doubt arising from compulsions or be governed by
intellect / Buddhi. To be governed by Buddhi/intellect requires spiritual/yogic
practice called Upasana / Sadhana.
AHANKARA – THE FALSE SENSE OF SELF IDENTITY
Aham refers to the fundamental notion of
self-identification / Garva as an individual. This is the source of pride,
arrogance, ego, self-importance, & self-glorification. It is a powerful
influence of Maya/ Prakriti which creates the notion of discrimination between
the Self & everything else.
The intellect directly connects with the third
dimension of your mind. Ahankara is sometimes translated as EGOISM, but it is
much more than that. Ahankara gives you a sense of identity. Once your Ahankara
takes on an identity, your intellect functions only in that context & is
seriously enslaved to your identity.
BUDDHI – THE TOOL OF DISCRIMINATION
The entity through which common sense / Adhyavasaya
& decision-making / Nishchai happens is called Buddhi. This means it is the
intellect of a being, a processing unit that churns memory & experiences
into various possibilities for decision-making. Buddhi is the forerunner of
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. It is not necessary that Buddhi will always result in
the perfect outcome. The role of Buddhi is to project an outcome for a given
input based on its Memory. Buddhi & Manas are in constant struggle. Based
on Buddhi’s outcome, Manas tries to make a Sankalpa / fixed decision or reject
it & exist in uncertainty, fantasy, an unreal state called Vikalpa. If Manas
likes buddhi’s outcome, then the entire being falls in line & results in a
pleasant experience, else it results in a struggle / Gharshana. There are times
when the Manas is forced to accept Buddhi’s outcome, either by threat or when
there are no other realistic means, but the Manas continue to stay in a
resentful state, dwelling in fantasy. This resentful state of the Manas will
cause the Buddhi to overwork itself, making the entire being reject the current
/ present Reality. This generates friction & waste thoughts among various
energies in a being. The Buddhi will not take you
beyond limits in any way, because it can only function based on the data that
is already there.
Vivek
is an analysis engine; it is a subtler faculty of Buddhi which operates upon
discrimination of any entity that takes one’s attention. The fundamental logical
separation between objects based on form, color, & more is done by Vivek.
The emotional aspect that places oneself on a pedestal is the Aham/Ego, which
uses the Vivek as a tool to draw superficial boundaries distinguishing self from
everything else. The Manas uses Vivek to determine what to include & whom
to exclude. These entities that capture one’s attention are called Vishaya,
which could be likes / raga or dislikes / dvesa both go side by side and are
not separate. This faculty is an
excellent means to overcome desire through analysis, rather than dogmatic &
forceful subjugation. When preoccupied with material aspects of life, some
desires can go dormant, but this doesn’t mean one has overcome such desires.
Steady & constant examination of one’s Vishaya will gradually lead to Vairagya;
this approach is called Abhyasa.
CHIT - THE
COSMIC INTELLIGENCE
The fourth
category of the mind is called Chit. Chit is mind without memory – pure
intelligence. This intelligence is like the Cosmic Intelligence – simply there.
Everything happens because of that. It does not function out of memory – it
simply functions. In a way, what you call cosmos is a living mind, not in the
sense of intellect but in the sense of Chit. Chit is the last point of the
mind. It connects to the basis of creation within you. It connects you with
your consciousness.
Chit is always
on – whether you are awake or asleep. Your intellect comes on and goes off.
Many times, it fails, even when you are awake. If Chit or the intelligence
within you was not always on, you could not stay alive. Try to conduct your
breath with your intellect – you will go crazy. Chit is keeping you alive,
keeping you going, making life happen. If you touch this dimension of your
mind, which is the linking point to one’s consciousness, you do not even have
to wish for anything, you do not have to dream of anything – the best possible
thing that can happen to you will anyway happen. Chit may be considered as a universal medium through which
consciousness functions on all the planes of the manifested universe. In fact,
it may be called a product of both, consciousness, and matter, or Purusha and Prakriti,
the presence of both being necessary for its functioning.
Chit Shakti is about touching the dimension of your
mind that is pure intelligence – unsullied by memory, unsullied by
identification. It is beyond ahankara, beyond buddhi, beyond judgment, beyond divisions
– simply there.
The Chit’s
Sattva Guna is the aspect closest to Purusha, so it requires one to unearth it
from the dominance of Rajas & Tamo Gunas. These coverings that blemish the
Chit are called Chittavritti. A vritti means some type of covering or a
smokescreen that shields the Chit from its true radiance. These whirlpools / vritti
are categorized into five types.
Pramana - factual basis /
certainty, sensory bound.
Viparyaya - second-hand source, like belief,
sensory bound.
Vikalpa - conscious fantasy / controlled
daydreaming.
Smrti - subconscious memory leading to imagination.
Nidra - temporary states of sleep & dream.
Yoga
is the control of Chitta, regulation, channeling, mastery, integration,
coordination, stilling, quieting, setting aside of the modifications gross &
subtle thought patterns of the mind field.
Regulation - of inputs from the external world
Channeling - elevated thoughts selectively
Mastery - of disconnecting quickly
Integration - of all four aspects of mind field
Coordination - between Manas & Buddhi
Stilling - the Vrittis in the Chitta
Quieting - the mental noise
Setting aside - the mind fields agendas & focusing on
Chit/Purusha
PRATYHARA
- When the mental organs of senses & actions cease to be engaged with the
corresponding objects in their mental realm & turn back into the mind-field
from which they arose.
REINCARNATION OF ATMAN / SOUL
Jiva is the primordial force which wears this physical form /
Upadhi to sustain the physical Reality of Nature / Prakriti. It is not bound by
Time. It can be called Vibration of Brahman, to create a temporary state of its
absence. Thus, it masks the notion of Supreme Consciousness – ATMAN. The
destiny of Jiva is to shed its Vasana & realize itself to be Atman. Foolish
actions on the part of Manas leave a lasting impression on Jiva, which are
carried forward indefinitely. A Jiva traverses from one body to another &
accumulates various tendencies / Vasana in each life & then takes a new
host to shed its Karma Phala. The nature of Manas in its final Breath
determines the quality of Upadhi in the next life. Guna is the manifestation of
human character molded out of Vasana from previous lives depending upon the
level of Consciousness. Creation / Jagat / Universe is an IIUSION / MAYA of
Brahman that a Jiva experiences.
Upadhi is compartmentalized into five sheaths or coverings / koshas.
ANNAMAYA KOSH – physical sheath sustained by food.
PRANAMAYA KOSH – five varieties of air sustain its growth &
regeneration.
MANOMAYA KOSH – nonphysical subtle sheath sustained by mind field.
VIJNANMAYA KOSH – pure Intelligence unblemished by
desire/selfishness.
ANANDAMAYA KOSH – this sheath taps into Bliss of Atman.
Two seeds make up the software in Human beings. This software
works on TIME, ENERGY & MEMORY as information. SANCHITA
KARMA is the warehouse of all information / memories. It is responsible for
unconscious tendencies/Vasana’s towards various things. A
small portion is allocated for one lifetime as PRARBDHA KARMA. Time
is not in your hands, but Energy & Memory are. How you squander / dissipate
them is important. When you use up Memory then you die or become a vegetable.
If Energy runs out but Memory is still there, then you become a GHOST without a
Body. This is responsible for orientation in a life & determines how &
for how long you live. When this aspect gets worked out, you die. Past lives
are different compartments of your total memory. Suffering is a consequence of
how one carries their Memory & not the content. Hence the need to fix the
content of one’s life through spirituality. Spiritual training is
all about allocation of ENERGY into five areas of life – Physical, Involuntary,
External voluntary, Mental, Emotional.
This body is held together by MEMORY alone. Dynamism of Memory is
needed to bind all organs cells atoms together to our Intention of Living. SHIVA
– SHAKTI, Shiva is Inertia & Shakti is Dynamism. You can determine your
INTENT with the volume of Conscious memory. Conscious Intent is only with Human
Beings. If JOY is your companion, other things have no place in
life. A happy person does not cling to anyone / anything, just Blissful.
Cheerfulness is a certain sign of wisdom. Sadguru is with us now because He
wants to be with us all. He acts like a PEG for everything because all are
connected.
The use is it can reflect the whole cosmos. Otherwise,
it is quite comic. This is the choice – you can make your mind into a comical
place or a cosmic space. For it to become a cosmic space, you must keep all the
lies down – then TRUTH
will flourish on its own. The absence of falsehood is
Truth.
