PREFACE
Why I Remember
Every life is a collection of ledgers, some
written in ink, and some written in the heart. For a long time, I carried my
stories like a closed book, tucked away in the quiet corners of my mind. But as
time passes, I’ve realized that stories untold are like unpaid debts; they
belong to the posterity & generations that come after us. This book began with a
simple desire to trace a thread. I wanted to understand the man who helped
shape the landscape of my own life: My paternal grandfather Lala Hari Chand
Khanna & my maternal grandfather, Mr. Kishori Lal Mehra. They were men of
numbers and precision, A Banker & an accountant who lived through the
ultimate subtraction, the Partition of 1947. Watching their journeys from the
ancestral lands of West Punjab to the resettlement streets of Ambala Cantt, I
realized that my own resilience was not self-made. It was inherited. I am writing this
autobiography to bridge the gap between the past and the future. I want my
children and grandchildren to know that we did not just appear out of thin air;
we are the result of long journeys, difficult migrations, and the steady work
of those who came before us.
Within these pages, you will find more than just dates and
locations. You will find the scent of old offices, the dust of the Punjab
roads, the echoes of a family rebuilding itself, and the personal milestones
that defined my own path. This is
my ledger. It is a record of where we came from, so that those who read it may
know exactly where they stand.
PROLOGUE
The Realization that Life is Understood backwards but Lived
Forwards. From the Ledger books of 1840 to the digital Algorithms of
2000. A 160-year odyssey of
a single family: Beginning with a Great-Grandfather who served as a Banker in
1840, surviving the tectonic shifts of Partitions and three violent wars, and
culminating in Great Great-Grandsons becoming Billionaires by the year 2000.
This is the story of how toiling smart and applying wisdom can turn a heritage
of survival into a legacy of global triumph. A moment
of deep reflection where the fortress crumbled and we decided what was worth
saving.
The shifting sands
The world doesn’t change all at once; it shifts
in the quiet moments we usually fail to notice. Looking back now, the
trajectory seems so clear, but at the time, it felt like nothing
more than a series of disconnected breaths. I remember the smell of the
air that morning, sharp, expectant, and heavy with the kind of stillness that
precedes a storm. I wasn’t looking forward to writing a history; I was simply
trying to survive a Tuesday. But history has a way of finding you when you
aren't looking for it. Every
life is a collection of fragments. Some are polished like river stones; others
are jagged and still draw blood when you touch them. To understand the person
standing here today, we must go back to the fragments that were cast aside, the
ones I thought didn't matter. This is not just a record of what happened, but a
map of how I found my way back to myself.
To my
Grandchildren - Why We Crossed the Oceans
My Dear Ones,
It is the most important thing for the future
generations of your family. It explains the "Why" behind the
"How." It bridges the gap between the luxury of the past and the
liberty of the present.
You may look at the old photographs of the
"Big Bungalows" in Jamshedpur, or hear the stories of our ancestors
in Lahore who walked with armed guards, and wonder: Why did he leave it all?
Why exchange the status of a Chief Engineer and the comfort of servants for the
cold winds of the North Atlantic? The answer lies in the very "Value Engineering" I
practiced all my life. In India,
I learned that a man’s worth is often measured by his title and his proximity
to power. But in the "Stadium Dialogues" with Russi Mody, I saw that
the greatest value a leader can have is transparency and truth. I wanted
a life where my children and grandchildren wouldn't be judged by the
"Dynasty" they came from, but by the "Merit" they
possessed. I left
the bungalows because I realized that security is not a fence; it is a skill. I
wanted you to grow up in a place where the air is as clear as Reiki healing,
and where your path is limited only by your imagination, not by your caste or
your connections. We brought the Steel of the Tatas in our character and the
Resilience of the Khanna’s in our hearts. We traded the "Big
Bungalow" for a Big Future. When I look at the mini portable lathe I brought from India or see
myself practicing Reiki on a quiet Halifax afternoon, remember this: Every generation must find
its own bearings. I have built the bridge; you are the ones meant to
cross it. Always remember that wealth can be taken away on a single night, as
it was in 1947, but the education in your head and the compassion in your heart
are yours forever.
With all my love.
Your Grandfather (Engineer,
Healer, & Traveler)
Introduction: The Architecture of a
Legacy
They
say an engineer sees the world not as it is, but as it could be, a series of
structures, balances, and systems designed to withstand the pressures of time.
My life has been a study in that very structural integrity. From the red dust
of Jamshedpur’s industrial heart to the coastal horizons of Halifax, Canada, my
journey has been defined by a constant pursuit of the knowledge that transforms
the ordinary into the extraordinary.
This
book is a record of a family built on the pillars of valor and innovation. It
is the story of an elder brother who survived the fires of two wars to build a
billion-dollar tech empire; of a sister who defied the gravity of tradition to
conquer the clouds as a pilot; my younger brother who studied medicine at BHU
& migrated to England to conquer it in his own way, and of my own path as
an Industrial Engineer, navigating the delicate mathematics of professional
ambition and personal healing.
In
these pages, I share the "mid-course corrections" that shaped our
destiny. You will find the stories of how we turned our home into a hub for a
migrating clan, ensuring that the roots we transplanted in Western soil grew
deep and strong. You will witness the spiritual "course corrections"
that brought a lost daughter back to us in a brand-new body, proving that love,
like energy, is never lost, it only changes form.
To
live without knowledge is to be overwhelmed by the chaos of the world. But to
live with it, to apply the discipline of the military, the precision of
engineering, and the wisdom of the spirit, is to achieve a life that is
"IN-SANE" in its scale, its success, and its depth of joy. This is my
story. It is a legacy of how we engineered a family, a career, and a soul.
About the Author
The
Polymath Engineer: Synthesizing Industrial Precision, Creative Innovation, and
Spiritual Wisdom
Rohit Khanna is a distinguished
Production and Industrial Engineer, Value Analyst, and visionary Think Tank
whose life’s work bridges the precise world of mechanical efficiency with the
profound realms of human engineering and spiritual consciousness. With a
foundational Bachelor of Engineering in Production Engineering from the
prestigious Punjab Engineering College and decades of high-level industrial
experience, including seminal leadership roles at TISCO and key Canadian
industrial sectors, Rohit has established himself as a Master of Resource
optimization, manufacturing excellence, and value engineering.
Yet, to define him solely by his
engineering accolades is to miss the true scope of his genius. Rohit operates
as an independent consultant and a one-man strategic think tank, constantly
pioneering social and industrial innovations that challenge conventional
boundaries.
Core
Pillars of a Multi-Faceted Legacy
The Creative Innovator & Inventor: Possessing a rare, relentless inventive spirit, Rohit
views the world through the lens of functional design and biomimicry. His
concepts, ranging from gravity-powered factories and innovative airships to
accident-proof vehicle designs, frequently draw parallels between complex
biological systems and industrial mechanics. His creativity extends to
master-level woodworking and toolmaking, where he brings complex physics to
life through handcrafted mechanisms, including a mathematical balance toy, a
high-strength rocking giraffe, and a center-revolving dining table.
The Value Analyst & Philatelist: Rohit’s engineering mindset of "maximum efficiency
through elegant design" manifests brilliantly in his personal passions. An
avid, world-class philatelist, he engineered a custom, 600-foot continuous
mechanical scroll system utilize rollers to dynamically catalog, organize, and
display his vast stamp collection by turning a traditional hobby into an
industrial design masterpiece.
The Spiritual Healer & Reiki
Master: Recognizing that the ultimate machine
is the human vessel, Rohit seamlessly transitions from physical engineering to
"Human Engineering." As a Reiki Master and spiritual healer, he is
deeply dedicated to the mechanics of soul consciousness, internal clarity, and
the profound power of silence. He bridges the gap between science and
spirituality, teaching how energy, mindfulness, and precise holistic practices
can optimize human health and vitality.
The Author & Philosopher: A powerful voice in literature and personal development,
Rohit is the author of the transformative book Magic of the Mind &
Miracle of the Body, exploring the profound connection between mental
alignment and physical well-being. More recently, he captured his rich
heritage, personal journey, and professional legacy in his celebrated
autobiography, The Engineer from Tata Nagar, a compelling narrative that
beautifully weaves his family lineage alongside the historic backdrop of the
Tata dynasty, charting a journey of migration, triumph, and wisdom from India
to Canada.
The
Philosophy
Whether optimizing a manufacturing
plant, designing a gravity-defying mechanical concept, structuring a literary
piece, or channeling healing energy, Rohit Khanna operates on a singular,
guiding principle: True innovation occurs when you align the structural
integrity of science with the infinite potential of the human spirit. He
remains a disciplined thinker, a creator of joy for his family, and a
forward-looking visionary currently pioneering the use of cutting-edge AI
technologies to transform the written word into immersive audio-visual content
for the next generation.
Rohit
Khanna is an Industrial Engineer by training and a legacy-builder by nature.
With a career rooted in the precision and structural integrity of major
industrial hubs, he has spent a lifetime applying the principles of
mathematical balance not only to machines and systems but to the more complex
architecture of family and fate. Born into a lineage of innovators and
warriors, he witnessed firsthand the transformation of the Indian industrial
landscape before migrating to Canada. In Halifax, he and his wife, Rekha,
established a "hub for the clan," successfully helping six families
navigate the challenges of migration and settlement. His life is a testament to
the power of deep, actionable knowledge that allows an individual to pivot
through tragedy, engineer success across borders, and maintain a spiritual
equilibrium in a fast-changing world. When he isn’t documenting the lively
achievements of his family or "talking shop" about operational
efficiency with the next generation of entrepreneurs, he is a dedicated
observer of the spiritual connections that bind us through lifetimes. He lives
by the philosophy that while knowledge is a tool, its application is what
creates a masterpiece.
Unique Signature
I
have lived my life like a scale model, studying every contour before laying the
foundation. I have turned coal into steel, dirt into sales, and a rented
apartment into a penthouse. I am a Production Engineer by Trade, but an
Engineer of Destiny by choice.
